Adolescent Discovered Dead After False Allegations of Taking Cremated Remains
One 14-year-old youth was discovered deceased just days following being falsely accused of stealing the cremated remains of a deceased infant during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has learned.
Tragic Discovery
Kai Lloyd's parents found his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.
False Allegations Begin
The inquest heard how his mother got a communication on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a individual asking if Kai was her child. The communication stated: "Inform him thanks for breaking into my apartment."
In a testimony presented to the proceedings, the mother said the individual had been in the news, asserting her baby's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a claim which was false.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An official inquiry from authorities later concluded the supposed break-in complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the items was never stolen in the beginning".
News coverage about the supposed taken remains attracted online comments, and although the teenager was not identified in the posts, his parent said individuals "knew it was him".
The "social media content were really distressing", she stated.
Emotional Wellbeing Effect
She added that her son had been diagnosed with moderate ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' views genuinely were important to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was untrue".
Kai was arrested at his residence, but nothing was found. He was transported to a police station and later freed under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had not reached out to the family by the time of his passing.
Isolation and Worry
His parent said her son "became isolated" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".
When she spoke to him about the alleged burglary, she said her child told her he had gone into the residence because the woman who lived there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he wanted, but denied taking anything.
Digital Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being harassed online after the accusations.
The inquest learned that one young adult encouraged Kai to end his life.
She had no concerns on the night before he died, explaining how she had heard him "laughing and teasing".
She described him as a "compassionate, affectionate" boy, and said her "family is completely devastated".
He had been "clearly concealing his concerns", she said, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".
School Response
The hearing heard from school personnel at the local High School.
On 8 November, she "overheard some boys talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".
"He told me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the conversation, the staff member said she rang the family's parents' telephone and left a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the allegations.
The proceedings learned his family said they never got that communication.
Formal Finding
Lead coroner informed the inquest he would await reports regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.
Delivering a narrative finding, he stated: "Around 8 November 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Probably falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of social media.
"On 11 November, he was questioned by the police and after his interview he was released while investigations proceeded."
The coroner determined: "There is no evidence that the acts or failures of any organization led to or added to his death and although it was the outcome of a personal action it is not possible to determine his intent."
