The themes follow breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That newfound toughness called for a fresh approach – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The trio's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their romantic horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

But Haim will always be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "There is nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
