James Comey court appearance
The former director has asserted his clean record concerning the indictments

Former FBI chief James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to congressional representatives and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

His legal representative filed the response representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer declared he would try to have the case dismissed for various factors including that his the accused, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was formally accused soon after Trump pressured his attorney general to take action against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald told the magistrate they intended to file various legal requests to dismiss the case before a trial, claiming the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was wrongfully appointed to handle the case.

The former director's case was originally managed by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under scrutiny from the former president after his investigation into an additional political adversary - the New York official - was unable to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

The former director appeared in good spirits as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was supported by his spouse, his wife and child Maureen, a US lawyer who the Trump administration terminated.

After listening to the judge recite his constitutional guarantees and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, James Comey was questioned if he understood the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he told the proceedings.

Previous Events

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about several months into Trump's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the period, Mr Comey was leading an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and the election effort.

During his tenure, Mr Comey caused a counter-response from the Democratic party when he stated just shortly prior to the national vote that he was probing presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government allege James Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he misled the Senate by claiming he had not approved someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to journalistic entities details about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also accuse the defendant of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and slow" the panel by providing untrue information to it.

Public Statements

In a video Mr Comey posted to his online platform after he was charged, he said he was wrongly accused and accused Donald Trump of acting like a "tyrant".

"We have been aware for years that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he added. "Thus initiate a trial."

The accusations against the former director came after the former president posted on digital channels demanding his top legal official, the attorney general, prosecute the former director and other people.
