From Solo Parent Holiday Hell to Pet-Sitting Bliss: A Mother's Transformation

Following my marriage ended, I thought holidays being a solo mother would be easy. Quickly realized they were either extremely costly, or seemed only suitable for “conventional” households, or were far too cheap that I returned home even more exhausted than when I started.

Initial Vacation Attempts

The initial attempt, tenting alongside companions, was fine until I had to dismantle the tent. Four hours of struggling with it in the heat later, I hated camping. Subsequently, an adventurous trip for single-parent families. The abseiling and caving were fantastic, but sleeping in a bunk bed ruined my spine. We attempted a budget package in Tenerife, but the hordes of traditional families were overwhelming, and poolside chats with fellow women died down since I wasn’t accompanied by a handy partner for their spouses to chat with. A trip to Mallorca alongside a pal and her kids was brilliant, but the expense was staggering.

Finding Pet-Sitting

Then, last autumn, a friend inquired if we’d house-sit her pets in Devon as she attended to a wedding. During a tranquil weekend, we strolled on the beach, and curled up by the fire in the evening. That led to house-sitting for her associate in Dorset, and it also went well. Inspired, I paid an annual £99 membership to register on a pet-sitting platform, through which, by caring for people’s animals, you stay at their residences without cost. Within a few days, I secured a ten-day pet-sit within the county, looking after a retriever called Buzz during the time his owners traveled overseas.

Each day's walks gave us the opportunity to explore breathtaking natural settings.

This marked the initial assignment for strangers, but any nerves dissipated as soon as we arrived the beautiful spacious home and met the gentle Buzz, who thrived for tummy rubs. Our daily dog walks gave us the opportunity to venture into magnificent scenic areas, and, once we returned back, we were able to relax outdoors for important discussions about our favourite “Ghosts” personas from the television series. There were no expensive tourist traps to traipse through – rather, we perused bookshops, treated ourselves to nail care, and went on kayak trips. I experienced more carefree and happier than I had for a long time, and could feel the connection with my daughter Polly strengthen every day. I don’t afraid to say that I wept with happiness. Life seemed possible again.

Could House-Sitting Right for You?

Pet-sitting may not be suitable for all. Certain individuals want zero duties during vacations apart from selecting their next cocktail, aren’t fond of dogs or cats, or perhaps feel odd regarding sleeping in a stranger’s bed, emptying their dishwasher, and putting out the trash. However the soothing rhythm of ordinary living, with work removed and new places to explore, suits me perfectly.

It keeps myself from slipping into complete inactivity, which makes me experience twitchy and oddly empty. Moreover, financially, pet-sitting acts as a life-saver for a single parent. Ten days break in a comparable property within the identical area we visited would set me back about £2,500 via rental platforms.

An Alternative Outlook

As for staying in a stranger’s home, I discovered it enriching. Although pet-sitting is a transaction, it is equally an act of faith between unfamiliar people and animals, which has brought out the finest version of me – my patient, loving and measured side, overflowing with appreciation for the individuals and places we encounter. I’ve already lined up an additional four days off, looking after a whippet within verdant Surrey, and, next year, I’d like to try house-sitting abroad. Due to a touch of innovative planning, we are able to experience the globe from the comfort of home – it just turns out to be another person’s.
