Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established strikers - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.
